Virgo has some deeper spiritual lessons for us, if we know where to look…
“SEASON of mists and mellow fruitfulness!
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eaves run;
To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells.”
– To Autumn, by John Keats.
Although technically it’s still summer, the sign of Virgo is a mutable sign, and it is in the mutable signs that one season dissolves into the next.
In Virgo (in the Northern Hemisphere) we say goodbye to Summer for another year and prepare to welcome Autumn.
The sign of Virgo is associated with health, healing, wholeness, the harvest, purity, the Divine Feminine, the Mother, Mother Earth and service, one’s vocation or ‘spiritual calling’. Traditionally at harvest time in small communities and villages, everyone was called upon to stop whatever they were doing and help to bring in the harvest before the weather turned colder and wetter. Virgo heeds this call, and goes where she is needed.
The simplest way to summarize the purpose of a Virgo Soul is “to be an expression of Divine Love through one’s vocation or dharma”. Yet there is much more to learn from an esoteric perspective about the true meaning of Virgo.
The word ‘dharma’ is a Sanskrit term that can be translated as ‘method’. In Buddhist teachings it is said to show the ‘way’ to full enlightenment.
While the idea of flowing Divine Love into the world is wonderful in itself, esoterically we have hints that there is an even deeper and highly significant ‘method’ hidden esoterically within the path of Virgo. What might this ‘method’ be?
Virgo is an Earth sign and Earth signs are practical above all else. Virgo is the sign of techniques and methodologies, yet Virgo is also a ‘mutable’ sign and mutable energy is changeable, flexible, and adaptable. The power of mutable signs lies in their capacity to dissolve forms and release their energy for transformation.
Esoterically Virgo is associated with the Virgin, or to be more specific, the Virgin Mother and the Christ Child. Herein lies a clue to the ‘hidden method’ of Virgo.
Many spiritual traditions teach that the highest attainment on our spiritual journey is to transcend ‘duality’ and live in oneness. This means releasing all concepts of separation: black/white, this/that, self/other… and Mother/Child.
In the Tibetan Bon tradition the ‘Mother’ is the symbol of the purest consciousness, the ‘ground of being’ from which all else arises. The ‘child’ is symbolic of our individual consciousness, or Soul, which arises from the ‘Mother’.
Our individual journey is about realizing the truth of this and, when we do, it is said that ‘the child returns to the Mother’. In other words, we realize that our individual consciousness, and the consciousness of all are not separate.
We no longer see any thing as separate but rather it is all one big dance of life, living in wholeness. This journey back to wholeness, the journey of the child returning to the Mother, is the hidden ‘method’ of Virgo. The ‘way’ that is being pointed out in the esoteric symbology of Virgo, is the way of very practically and tangibly ‘dissolving’ into oneness.
