LCM’s Soul Astrologer Ruth Hadikin explains the higher spiritual purpose of Sagittarius…

sagittariusSagittarius Season is upon us once again so this is a valuable opportunity to explore the deeper Soul-Centered meaning of this powerful sign.

The sign of Sagittarius is symbolized by the centaur, half-man half-horse, who is also an archer with his arrow (ideally) pointing towards the heavens. This is symbolic of our Soul’s journey through Sagittarius*.

Sagittarius is the sign of the philosopher, spiritual seeker, and spiritual teacher. The highest Soul purpose in Sagittarius is ‘to uplift humanity through the revelation of truth and wisdom’**. Before this can happen, Sagittarius has to realize wisdom for him or herself, and this is done by identifying the ‘correct goal’.

So what is this ‘correct goal’ that Sagittarius seeks? It is our highest spiritual nature – the truth of who we really are as a spiritual being. For the sake of simplicity we could call it our higher mind or consciousness, but it is so much more than what we normally think of as ‘mind’. It is truly the vastness of our whole being.

Spiritual teachers throughout the ages have developed various practices and techniques to enable us to correctly recognize the ‘goal’ of our true spiritual nature. This is the purpose behind many spiritual practices, including meditation.

Anyone who has personal planets in Sagittarius may well recognize this tendency to seek and pursue a ‘goal’ of some sort. The challenge with this is that Sagittarius is such a friendly and outgoing sign, there are myriads of worldly goals that will get your attention. Each one seemingly worthy of pursuit. But if you are to follow the higher path of Sagittarius you mustn’t allow worldly distractions to deter you from the ultimate goal – the discovery of your true nature.

In the ancient mystery schools Sagittarius was known as ‘the sign of silence’ because it was a requirement at this stage of our spiritual journey to spend as much time in silence as possible so that our lower, chattering, monkey mind would quieten and we could develop awareness of our true nature.

It is said that a ‘man’ (or woman for that matter) cannot serve two masters. This refers to our having to make a choice: are we going to continue to follow our lower mind, which will take us deeper and deeper into the labyrinth of mental engagement and worldly pursuits, or are we going to learn to step back and identify the ‘true master’ of our Higher Mind?

As the Soul journeys through the 12 signs of the zodiac there is often a developmental progression through the elements. Sagittarius is a fire sign (the other two being Aries and Leo). In the case of the fire element it is the journey of Self. So what begins in Aries culminates in Sagittarius. What begins as self-existence in Aries, becomes self-awareness through to self-realization in Leo, which then becomes self-empowerment in Sagittarius.

This is important because until we have the power to choose our own path, to choose our own destiny – we will be unable to break free from the tyranny of the lower mind. This is why Sagittarius is also associated with freedom and liberation. It is thought this journey of liberating ourselves from the lower mind, that we find the ultimate freedom of Higher Mind.

Only when Sagittarius has realized true liberation of mind will he or she stop seeking. Then s/he will become the true spiritual teacher, uplifting humanity through the revelation of truth and wisdom.
